[edit] Good examples

[edit] Journler

I have found no better example of the principle of 'shelfless' file sorting, albeit in a singular application, than Journler, a diary application for Macintosh. This application has flaws (like limited functionality for adding tags) but it allows much of what I'm describing here including:

  • A flat data pool initially tagged/categorised by date
  • Meta information about entries based on user tags
  • Inheritable smart directories
  • Traditional directories with the ability to reference the same entry in multiple directories

See: http://journler.com/

It's a shame this app is so bloated with superfluous features. The list above is probably the best way of organising a diary.

[edit] Stikkit & Sandy

These two are complimentary online services allowing users to describe events, relationships, dates and note information in natural language, and returning meaningful notes or reminders based on a machine-interpretation of the input language. Essentially they're basic natural language text-parsers. The results are quite powerful with only a little training.
